Why I Left Corporate to Build TD Strategy Group

I didn't wake up one day and decide to become an entrepreneur. If I'm honest, entrepreneurship found me the hard way, through a layoff I didn't see coming and didn't ask for.

I've been in leadership roles for most of my career, but since 2020 I was specifically in corporate operations, leading teams, managing leave and disability claims processes, and becoming the person people came to when something needed to get fixed, organized, or streamlined. I earned my MBA along the way. I was good at my job. And more than once, that didn't matter when it came time for the company to make cuts.

I've now been through multiple layoffs in my career. Each one stung in its own way, but each one also taught me something I couldn't have learned any other way: my stability was never actually in the company. It was in the skills I carried with me. The ability to see a broken process and fix it. The ability to bring order to chaos. The ability to lead people well, even under pressure. Nobody could lay off my expertise.

After my most recent layoff from Strada Global, I sat with a decision. I could spend all my energy chasing the next corporate role and hoping this time would be different. Or I could finally build something that was mine, something no restructuring or budget cut could take away from me.

I chose to build TD Strategy Group.

I started this business because I saw how many small business owners, solopreneurs, and nonprofit leaders are trying to do everything themselves. They're brilliant at the thing they set out to do, whether that's advocacy, coaching, event planning, or running a growing team, but the operational side of the business (the SOPs, the systems, the people processes) often gets pushed to the back burner because there's simply no time. That's exactly where I come in. I get to bring 12 years of leadership and operations experience to businesses that could never afford to hire someone like me full time, but need that expertise just as much as any Fortune 500 company does.

Some days building this business full time is scary. I'm doing it while raising my son, staying active in my faith community, and navigating everything else life brings. But I've learned that being laid off doesn't have to be the end of a story. It can be the very thing that pushes you into the one you were meant to write for yourself.
